If you have a standard start date of September or October 2012, you need to think about applying for ATAS clearance now.
Ideally you should apply approximately 5 months before your start date, so if you have a non-standard state (for example starting on 1st November, 1st December or 1st January) make it 5 months before the start date.
Make sure you have the following information:
1. JACS code
2. Your course title
3. Your research statement
